Seersucker Social: a 1920’s Game Night

Lots of people think about Vizcaya’s gardens as a place to take a leisurely stroll, sit under the oak trees to enjoy a quiet afternoon, or alongside the bay and watch the boats come and go. All of these are good. But what people don’t do is PLAY – so we’re fixing that.

Taking inspiration from the 1920s, when Vizcaya was James Deering’s private home, we’re putting together a game night in the gardens – think lawn bowling, yard dice and croquet. We’ll have musicians sharing some great jazz sounds and there will be lots of yummy bites and refreshing drinks. We encourage guests to embrace the era and come in their seersuckers or other period attire – because anything worth doing is worth doing right!

The Art of the Book: 3-Part Bookmaking Workshop

This 3-part book workshop will be held on the following Thursdays: September 8, 15, and 22 from 7:00-8:30pm. ***By registering for this event, you are committing to attend all three parts of the workshop.***

Books are objects that many of us enjoy everyday—they hold stories, recipes, knowledge, and pictures, to name a few. But books can also be works of art in and of themselves.

Please join Watertown book artist Katie Higgins-White in exploring the fascinating process of bookmaking this September. Over the course of three consecutive meetings, we’ll give you the chance to enter the wonderful world of book arts!

You’ll begin with simple bookbinding techniques during the initial session, learn to create pop-ups and pockets in the second, and, finally, put these elements together to create a polished, thematic book of your own!
